Cedar size
and training

When to trim a cedar hedge?

Cedar hedges are often preferred to fences as a means of providing privacy to one's property. But not all cedar hedges are equally beautiful. Do you wonder why some cedar hedges are so much nicer than others? Simple: they are maintained annually.

However, there are some appropriate times to trim cedars, namely between the end of June and the beginning of August. By this time, the new growth is usually at or near its maximum size for the current year. Doing it in the spring or fall is not recommended. It is also best to postpone the job if it is too hot in the summer.

In other words, the optimal interval is still limited. So plan ahead for your annual maintenance appointment.

At Emondage Lac-Brome, we can also reserve a recurring date for you each year. Contact us at 579-589-5474 to discuss which tree care services might be right for you.

The right way to trim

The top of a young cedar is not normally trimmed in the first few years. It is better to focus on the lateral branches. This way, the trees reach the height you want them to have without any hindrance. From then on, we can cut off their tops, because they are mature enough.

The conical shape is interesting, because the trees receive sunlight throughout their foliage. This favors their development. When winter comes, a mass of snow will be deposited on the branches, the specimen will be able to better resist all this weight.

There are rules to follow when trimming cedar hedges. For example, new growth should not be cut back more than a third. Sometimes, it may be acceptable to remove half of them, but never more than that. These precautions allow the plant to grow in the best possible conditions.

To avoid problems that cannot be repaired, it is better to reserve such work for experts. Clumsiness caused by not knowing what to do can indeed harm the development of the tree, or even stop it altogether. So avoid this. This way, you too will have every chance of enjoying a thick hedge!

Training size

Training size is often less known than its counterpart for cedars. This form of maintenance is spread out over the years. The objective is to give the specimen a specific structure or shape. The ideal is to start with young trees. This recommendation is understandable, because the younger the plants are, the lower the risk of complications and the faster they recover from the scars left by any trimming. They heal better because small branches recover faster or better than large ones. If you have fruit trees, you will be happy to know that training size is a technique that helps them produce more fruit.

The goals can also be to make a tree's foliage look right, so that it shades or does not shade in a particular location. This can allow for a quiet and refreshing corner in the future or on the contrary to ensure that the sun shines on your terrace for example.

Also, call us preferably when your tree is still young, otherwise not too late. Our experts at Emondage Lac-Brome know what they're doing and are able to adapt their professional actions to the type of specimen in front of them, no matter what stage of maturity it's at or what type of tree it is, whether it's fruit or other. As this is a technique that requires precision touch, it is essential that we make a preliminary visit in order to propose you a personalized interview. Our quotations are free.
